Sunset timelapse tutorial. Best camera settings

Updated: Aug 8, 2022

My sunset timelapses have been doing well lately on social media and even on TV, ha! :)

Anyhow, I thought I would share some love so I have made a YouTube video tutorial of my favoured camera settings.

The first timelapse was of some water towers on route to Rye with the photos shot from around 2 miles away. The second timelapse is at St Thomas Becket church in Romney Marsh, photographed from around 300 metres away and the third timelapse is at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness from around 1km away.

Transcript below the video:

"For this 1st timelapse the skies were very clear, so I had the camera on aperture priority mode with the EV adjustment set to a third of a stop under exposed.

Shooting slightly under exposed gives you more room for editing in post processing and avoids unrecoverable blown out highlights.

I set the white balance as fixed to avoid any flicker. You can use daylight or cloudy for a sunset. Cloudy White balance comes up a bit warmer.

In camera intervalometer was set to take a shot every 3 seconds. Final video played back at 24 shots per second.

For this second timelapse the sky had passing cloud, so I had the camera set on manual mode with a fixed exposure time.

I again set the exposure to a third of a stop under the recommendations of the light meter for easier post production.

White balance was again fixed as cloudy.

Intervalometer was at the same setting of one shot every 3 seconds. Aperture F6. "
