Sunflower photoshoot near Tunbridge Wells, Kent

I did my second photo shoot of the week with Nicola West, this time in Goudhurst near Tunbridge Wells using a local sunflower field.

It was a fun shoot with a photographer friend from SJM photos, although we did come away with many insect bites 😅.

For this Photoshoot I used my Nikon Z6 along with my Tamron 70-200mm G2 f2.8, Nikkor 85mm F1.4 and Tamron 35mm F1.4.

Nicola was lit with a Rotolight video light from the front and for some of these photos, the sun was used to create a nice rim light from behind.

Unfortunately the weather was a bit unstable with many passing clouds so it wasn’t optimum conditions for what I had in mind.

The video light was useful as there was two of us taking photos so continuous lighting was required. For scenarios where I wanted to overpower the sun, my 600 watt Godox strobe would have been more suitable.

The Rotolight is handy in that it is a quick setup and lightweight but my preferred lighting setup is still using a strobe with an octagon softbox or similar though, as you have much greater control over the light, power, spread and direction.

Overall though, the video light did a good job and was the best tool for the job in this multi photographer scenario.
