Samyang 35-150mm F2-2.8 on the Panasonic L mount. First impressions and review.

Updated: Sep 23

With a surge of wedding and event photography over the summer, I thought that I would add the Samyang 35-150mm F2-2.8 to my camera lens arsenal.

I sometimes feel like a diva trying to decide what to "wear" when it comes to choosing a lens for an event.

“Should I take the 85mm F1.4 for some nice shallow depth-of-field portraits?

But what if I want to shoot closer or further? I’ll have to keep changing lenses.

Ok, so take the 70-200mm? Yes, but that’s big and heavy, and I’ll have to permanently carry my other camera for wider group shots.

Ok, take the 20-70mm kit lens. Yes, but that doesn’t have a very fast aperture, so you won’t get a very shallow depth of field.”

That’s just one example of the lens choice dilemma for me, and I presume, many other photographers.

I originally came across the Tamron 35mm-150mm F2-2.8 for Sony. At the time, it wasn’t available for either Nikon or Panasonic. While it is now available for Nikon, there wasn’t anything for Panasonic, which is my latest and most beloved camera.

Anyhow, along comes Samyang with a very close copy for the Panasonic L mount (yes!), with the same focal and aperture range of 35-150mm F2-2.8.

In the video below, I share some initial photos and thoughts from a first-use autumn photoshoot, along with some thoughts on a couple of annoying quirks out of the box. I’ve also attached the photos below.
