Moon rise timelapse at Belle Tout Lighthouse, Beachy Head.

Updated: Jul 8

June was the month of the strawberry supermoon. Whilst I couldn’t get out on the actual day due to family commitments, the day prior was a 98% full moon and had perfectly clear skies.

Last year I tried to get a picture of the moon behind Belle tout lighthouse (by Birling Gap Beachy head, Eastbourne) but I ended up with the moon a fair amount above the lighthouse rather than behind it. This was one of my first attempts at planning an alignment using the PhotoPills app.

At this time I had recently purchased a vintage 500mm Tamron sp vintage mirrored lens to experiment with.

A year later and after using the Photopills app at least a dozen times, I thought I would have another attempt.

I’ve recently got back into capturing timelapses so I thought I would go one better than a single photo and time-lapse the rise until it met the Lighthouse. Good fortune was on my side this time around and the moon kissed the top of the Lighthouse perfectly with it visibly passing the top windows of the Lighthouse. I don’t think I could better this time lapse if I tried.

As well as the lightest timelapse I’ve also attached a single frame of the central alignment along with last years 1st attempt using the vintage lens.
