I captured the Extreme Aurora at Reculver Towers on May 10th 2024.

So, after a couple of past timelapse captures at Reculver Towers, I thought I would return for another attempt. There were many reports of a very powerful CME heading towards Earth, so it was a potential opportunity that could not be ignored. Little did I know that this would be a once-in-a-100-year event!

I arrived at Reculver Towers around 7 pm. I was a little early as I had been doing home renovations at my home in Maidstone with a carpenter friend who needed a lift to Canterbury for a coach back home at 6:30 pm. It made sense to arrive early since I was in the area. I popped into The King Ethelbert Inn for dinner and then returned to my VW Camper van to wait until dark. The weather conditions were a bit hazy, so there was also a bit of hoping involved!

While waiting, I decided to film a possible intro to a YouTube video should the conditions align. Oh, and boy, did they align. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see the Aurora on this scale and so far south. Conditions that even Norway would be proud of. My Panasonic captured every possible colour of the Northern Lights here in Kent, United Kingdom! I've attached the video below along with a couple of shots. Enjoy! :)
