First test of the Fuji GFX 100s and GF 80mm F1.7

I recently made the big decision to trade in all my Nikon gear for the Fuji GFX 100s medium format camera. To put it through its paces, I collaborated with Beth Tagg for a test shoot. Unfortunately, our timing coincided with Storm Bert, which limited both the duration of the shoot and our choice of attire.

Despite the challenging conditions, we made the best of it and still managed to capture some solid shots!

First impressions? There’s something distinctly different about the images the Fuji GFX 100s produces. Subjects seem to pop from the background more prominently, and the 16-bit tonal range adds a richness that elevates the overall look of the photos.

I tried not to let the specifications overly influence my expectations, but after reviewing the images and discussing them with others, it’s clear that this camera delivers a noticeable 3D-like "pop" in its photos—a quality that many have also observed. The 4:3 aspect ratio is also something that I am a fan of. Prior to purchasing I reviewed quite a few of my 35mm full frame shots and found that I quite often tend to crop in somewhere between 3:2 and 4:3, so this medium format aspect ratio feels tailor made for my shooting style.

I’m excited to plan a more controlled shoot soon, and I can already imagine how incredible this camera will be for wedding photography.

Oh, and let’s talk about those 102 megapixels—just wow. Some of the images below showcase how impressive the detail is, even when cropped in.
