Canterbury Cathedral and Water Tower Location Shoot

Updated: May 26, 2022

I recently saw a picture of Canterbury Cathedral zoomed in from a distance with the moon rising above it.

I gleaned a little bit of information from the post which said it was taken from about a mile away.

Using this information and the angle that the photo was taken, I then went onto Google Maps and started dropping pins about a mile away and using street view to scan the area and see if the cathedral was visible at the same perspective.

After about 30 minutes of hunting on Google Maps I found a location. I exported the co-ordinates to the app Photo pills to see what the line up of sunrise/set and moonrise/set looked like. I then headed over to Canterbury a few hours later for a closer look.

I like to find locations where you can face different directions at different times of the year so that you can catch the sunrise one day and the moonrise on another, or similar.

As it turns out there is also a water tower near the location used to shoot the cathedral. I was hoping to catch the moonrise on this particular occasion but the weather changed for the worst.

Not wanting the trip to go to waste, I took this long exposure of clouds moving over the water tower.

Unless the clouds are completely motionless grey, there is usually something you can do to create an interesting shot. give me rainy days, lightning, dramatic cloud motion but please, no grey!

It’s sometimes quite enjoyable scouting locations even if you do come home with an empty camera and a rained through pair of jeans as the next time the elements align you are confident and good to go for that desired shot.
