On Sunday night, I ventured into London to scout for suitable city streets in and around Soho and Leicester square for a Blade Runner-inspired photography session. The goal was to capture city lights and then add a palette of vibrant blues and magentas in post processing, creating a futuristic, atmospheric aesthetic.
This outing was a practice run ahead of planning a shoot with a model. The concept will involve using a transparent umbrella and a raincoat, with neon lights providing a striking backdrop. Ideally, it would be one of those rare occasions where I’d actually welcome rain—it would enhance the effect beautifully!
This style of photography is often referred to as Cyberpunk or Tech Noir, drawing inspiration from the imagined dystopian futures in the 1980s.
In the video below, I walk through my editing process, from shifting tones to blue and purple to creating highlighted masks using duplicate layers, painting in a glow, and fine-tuning the image in Adobe Camera Raw with the luminosity slider.
I’ve also attached a couple of before-and-after shots. These were captured on my Fuji GFX 100s with the GF 23mm F4.0 lens.
To save server space, I’ve scaled the images down to around 4K resolution. However, if you’d like to experiment with a 100MP RAW file, feel free to reach out via my contact page, and I’ll see what I can do. 😊
